Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahani: Movie Review

Hmmm… So where should I start from?? Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani has so much to deliver that by the end of the movie it became an overwhelming experience for me. It is an oversized, melodramatic, catastrophic Karan Johar saga that has nothing to do with the realities of human life.

Thankfully the story has a message that might give few people an urge to watch it till the end. But, personally, the Lavishness of Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani irritated me throughout the movie.

The screenplay will not fail you after the intermission. First half was a little lethargic.

Character Dissection

Let us begin with Alia Bhatt. Drastically a wrong choice for the character of a TV anchor, Alia Bhatt very convincingly proves that it is not the ACTOR that elevates the CHARACTER but it the CHARACTER that enhances the performance of an ACTOR in any FILAM. Remember her as Gangubai, and watch her as Rani. There is a huge difference to cry for. She seems an unfit choice for Rani’s character!

Ranveer Singh’s work is prominent and is able to deliver the right tone to the character of Rocky. He steps into this “Dilli wala ladka” character very easily, (he has proved it in Band Baja Barat also). Rocky is like Ranveer and probably Ranveer is like Rocky. There was no difference for me.

Dharmendra’s character will make your heart pop out with love and sympathy. He appears sweet and subtle throughout the movie. Actually his is the only character that will provide you ease whenever he comes on the screen. Apart from that it is always a pleasure to watch such legends on screen.

Jaya Bachchan as Dhanalakshmi Randhawa looks like a spoof on herself. Her character in spite of being so important in the script goes unnoticeable.

Shabana Azmi was good and looks in sync with the character of Jamini Chatterjee. She plays the love interest for Dharmendra and captures the eyes of the audiences because of the character she plays.

But I truly believe Shabana would have been much better as Dhanlakshmi and Jaya would have been better as Jamini.

Special mention to the not so important people in the FILAM– Aamir Bashir, Churni Ganguly, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Kshitee Jog and my personal favourite Namit Das. All of them have my heart! More hard work has been done to justify these characters by the director.

About the Director!

Karan Johar might feel that he has created a master piece in the form of “TUM KYA MILE” with his chiffon sarees, ultimate cinematography, location etc. but trust me that is not the case. I recommend you to watch “AAJ FIR JEENE KI TAMMANNA HAI” form the movie GUIDE. Yes I agree it is a song with a completely different mood, yet is a perfect example of cinematic poetry. This song is a master piece in every sense.!

With this I rest my case! Now, should you watch Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani or not?? I believe you should! Because such movies make you understand the importance of ordinariness, and simplicity. Such movies teach us that the closer you are with realities the closer you are- with your soul.
